Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

General Henry Hugh Shelton served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001. He is a native North Carolinian, born in Tarboro, North Carolina. General Shelton attended North Carolina State University. He earned a degree in textiles while earning his Army commission through ROTC training. He also earned a master's degree from Auburn University in 1973. His education also includes Harvard University, the Air Command and Staff College and the National War College.

General Shelton spent 38 years in a variety of command and staff positions in the continental United States, Hawaii, and Vietnam. General Shelton served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and a series of command and staff assignments. Selected for promotion to brigadier general in 1988, General Shelton served two years in the Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff. In 1989 he began a two-year assignment as the Assistant Division Commander for Operations of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he participated in the liberation of Kuwait during Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM. Following the Gulf War, Shelton commanded the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. In 1993, he was given command of XVIII Airborne Corps. General Shelton led the Joint Task Force responsible for Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti in 1994. In 1996, General Shelton was promoted to the rank of general and the position of Commander in Chief of U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

General Shelton was appointed the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 1997. During his tenure, General Shelton worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families, and military retirees by championing a number of landmark quality of life initiatives, including the largest military pay raise in 18 years, pay table and bonus reform, and critical improvements in both retirement and healthcare programs. He made great strides in improving the readiness and retention of the current force while simultaneously crafting Joint Vision 2020-the roadmap for the Future Joint Force. General Shelton established Joint Forces Command to consolidate joint experimentation efforts and guide the transformation of the U.S. Armed Forces for the 21st Century.

Among his many military awards, General Shelton has received four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Army Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and the Purple Heart. He has been decorated by 16 foreign governments. In 2001, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Highlights of his civilian awards include the Charlotte (NC) World Affairs Council World Citizen Award for 2002, North Carolina's highest Award for Public Service, the Eisenhower Award from the Business Executives for National Security, the American Academy of Achievement's Golden Plate Award, Intrepid Freedom Award, and recognition as National Father of the Year, among others.

For his exemplary service to his country, the 107th Congress bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal on General Shelton on September 19, 2002.

Currently, General Shelton serves on the Board of Directors of the following NYSE companies: Anheuser Busch, Red Hat, CACI and Ceramic Protection Corporations. He is also on the boards of Robbins-Gioia, CoVant, M.I.C. Industries and The O'Gara Group and provides consulting services to Northrop Grumman. He is Executive Director of The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at North Carolina State University and speaks Nationwide for Keppler Speakers of Arlington, VA.. He and his wife, Carolyn, also serve as directors on The Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrama Research Foundation, Washington, DC.

He and Carolyn reside in North Carolina, as do two of their three sons.

Richard Burr was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994, and established himself as a passionate legislator on health care issues and worked to restore accountability to the federal government.

In 2004 he was elected to the United States Senate and was sworn in on January 4, 2005. Senator Burr continues to focus on job growth across North Carolina by working to ensure a robust economic environment and strong public schools. He is dedicated to finding common-sense solutions to increase access to affordable, quality health care for all North Carolina families. He is a vocal advocate for our men and women in the military and their families, and for the growing population of veterans across North Carolina.

Senator Burr serves as ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee where he works to improve the quality of health care and service veterans receive. Burr also sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee; the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee; the Energy and Natural Resources Committee; and the Indian Affairs Committee.

The son of a minister, Senator Burr and his family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina when he was a young child. After graduating from Wake Forest University, he began his career far from the halls of Congress by spending seventeen years in business with Carswell Distributing, a wholesale commercial products company.

He currently serves as a Board Member of Brenner Children’s Hospital.

Congressman Bob Etheridge is a proud native of North Carolina's Second Congressional district where he has lived virtually his entire life.  He was born in Sampson County, grew up in Johnston County, and makes his home in Harnett County, where he has been a small businessman, part-time tobacco farmer, and full-time public servant.  

He served eight years as North Carolina's elected State Superintendent of Schools before being sworn into Congress in 1997. Congressman Etheridge has earned a solid reputation for his leadership on education issues, first as a Harnett County commissioner and later in North Carolina's General Assembly.   

Congressman Etheridge currently serves on the House Agriculture, Budget and Homeland Security committees.  He is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management of the House Agriculture Committee.  As the only former state schools chief serving in Congress, Congressman Etheridge has emerged as one of the Capitol's most authoritative voices for school construction, character education, early childhood development, youth safety, college aid and other education issues.  Congressman Etheridge has also been a staunch advocate for first responders in North Carolina and across the country, earning the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s 2004 Legislator of the Year Award.  

He is a member of the New Democrat Coalition (NDC), a group of moderate, pro-business Democrats. The NDC plays a pivotal role in the U.S. House on important causes like balanced budgets, export promotion, research and development, education and economic growth.   

Congressman Etheridge has used common sense North Carolina values to guide his work in Congress.  He is active in his church and teaches Sunday School.  For his diligent and decades-long work for the Boy Scouts, Congressman Etheridge has received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest district award a Scout leader can receive.  

Congressman Etheridge attended public school at the historic Cleveland School in Johnston County and after winning a basketball scholarship became the first member of his family to graduate from college when he earned his B.S. Degree in Business Administration from Campbell University in 1965. After graduating, Bob served two years in the U.S. Army. He has done graduate work in economics at NC State University and has received honorary degrees from Campbell University, Fayetteville State University, Pfeiffer College, and Shaw University.  

Congressman Etheridge and his wife, Faye Cameron Etheridge, are the proud parents of Brian and his wife, Meredith, Catherine and her husband, Tim Otto, and David and his wife, Casey.  They are also the proud grandparents of three grandchildren.

Presently serving his 5th term in Congress, Robin Hayes is a businessman with a personal background of community involvement and public service. He represents the 8th Congressional District of North Carolina. The 8th District includes the whole counties of Anson, Richmond, Scotland , Hoke, Montgomery, and Stanly – and portions of Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Union and Cumberland Counties.

Congressman Hayes serves on three House Committees: Agriculture (Ranking member of the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee and also serving on the Specialty Crops Subcommittee, and the Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research), Transportation and Infrastructure (serving on the Highway and Transit and Pipelines Subcommittee,  the Aviation Subcommittee, and the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee), and Armed Services (Serving on the Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, and the Readiness Subcommittee.) Congressman Hayes also serves as the founding Co-Chairman of the Special Operations Forces Caucus, Co-Chairman of the Philanthropy Caucus, past Co-Chairman of the Sportsman’s Caucus and he is an Assistant Whip in the House leadership.

He earned a degree in History from Duke University in 1967. Upon graduation, he began a career in business that has ranged from textiles to trucking.

Robin and his wife Barbara have been married for 39 years and have two children: Winslow Galloway who resides in Boone, NC with her husband, Lonnie -- and Bob who resides in

Charlotte with his wife, Heather. Robin and Barbara are members of First Presbyterian Church of Concord.  They are proud to have four grandchildren.

Rep. Mike McIntyre

Mike McIntyre was first elected to represent North Carolina's Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. He is now serving in his 6th term.

In Congress, Congressman McIntyre is a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he pushes to promote and protect our farm families and is committed to our nation’s servicemen and women, veterans, and military retirees. He serves as Co-Chairman of the Business & Technology Task Force of the Blue Dog Coalition. He is also Co-Chairman of the Rural Caucus Task Force on Jobs, Economic Development and Transportation. A Senior Whip on Capitol Hill and a member of the Majority Leader's Advisory Council, Congressman McIntyre also serves on the Steering Committee of the Rural Health Care Coalition and as Co-Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Responsible Fatherhood. He was selected his first year in office as a Congressional delegate to the President’s Summit for America ’s Future.

The National Guard Association has presented the congressman the prestigious Charles Dick Medal of Merit for his outstanding work on behalf of the National Guard and our national defense. The Air Force Association and the Association of the U.S. Army have both recognized his efforts on their behalf, and Congressman McIntyre represents the House Armed Services Committee on the U.S. Naval Academy's advisory board. He is also Co-Chairman of the Special Operations Forces Caucus. Because of his steadfast commitment to all branches of our military, The Military Officers' Association of North Carolina has conferred upon Congressman McIntyre Honorary Life Membership.

Congressman McIntyre, was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa as a political science major in 1978 and received his Juris Doctorate in 1981. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon Congressman McIntyre for his meritorious service and distinction in public service by improving the quality of life in southeastern North Carolina.

In addition to his Washington office, Rep. McIntyre maintains four district offices in Fayetteville, Lumberton, Shallotte and Wilmington. Congressman McIntyre lives in

Lumberton with his wife, Dee Strickland McIntyre. They have two sons.

Rep. Sue Myrick

Representative Sue Myrick came to Congress in 1995 after building a successful advertising and public relations business, and serving two terms as mayor of Charlotte, NC.  She is currently in her seventh term representing North Carolina's 9th district, which covers portions of Union, Mecklenburg, and Gaston Counties.  Congresswoman Myrick is one of only 77 women currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congresswoman Myrick serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which is the oldest legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and oversees public health, telecommunications, energy, consumer protection, food and drug safety, air quality, environmental health, and interstate and foreign commerce. Congresswoman Myrick is a member of the Health subcommittee, the Energy subcommittee, and the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection subcommittee.

From 2002 to 2004, Congresswoman Myrick served as chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), the largest voting bloc in Congress.  The RSC is a group of House Republicans that are organized for the purpose of advancing a conservative economic and social agenda for America . Under Congresswoman Myrick's tenure, the RSC grew from 65 to over 96 members and became an influential force in shaping policy in Congress.  In January 2003, Congresswoman Myrick was appointed as a Deputy Majority Whip of the 108th Congress by Majority Whip Roy Blunt. In addition, she was personally selected to be a member of President Bush’s Working Group on Iraq .

A small businesswoman herself, Congresswoman Myrick is the former President and CEO of Myrick Advertising and Public Relations and Myrick Enterprises. Before Congress, she served on the Charlotte City Council and was a two-term mayor of the City of Charlotte. Congresswoman Myrick remains the first and only female mayor in Charlotte history.

As an advocate for stronger Homeland Security, Congresswoman Myrick created her own Homeland Security Taskforce for the
Charlotte region.  This taskforce is comprised of top security professionals from around the 9th Congressional District.  It advises local officials of possible terrorist loopholes in their security systems, and advises officials how to prevent terrorist attacks.  

Congresswoman Myrick has two children and three step-children. She and her husband, Ed, have 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
